Anti-Racism Month 2022
Every year March is an important month for Irish and global Anti-Racism Movements due to various national and international celebrations and commemoration days taking place, which focus on combating racism and celebrating diversity.
21st March marks the most important day in every anti-racist’s calendar. On that day in 1960, the Apartheid regime’s police opened fire and killed 69 Black people at a peaceful demonstration for equality and against apartheid laws in Sharpeville, South Africa. This date has since been declared the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination when the people across the globe show their opposition to racism and solidarity with those affected by it and in remembrance of the harmful impact of racism on individuals and communities. “Youth standing up against racism” is the 2021 theme for the Day.
Other important dates throughout march
Apart from Anti-Racism Day, other important events and celebrations are taking place throughout March. Irish Traveller Ethnicity Day opens the month on 1 March. It marks the anniversary of the formal recognition of the Travellers ethnicity in 2017 while celebrating their culture and heritage. Zero Discrimination Day is an annual day also celebrated on 1 March each year by the United Nations and other international organisations. The day aims to promote equality before the law and in practice throughout all of the member countries of the UN. International Women’s Day, marked annually on 8 March, is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women.

On March 5th at 12pm The National Women’s Council (NWC) will hold a rally outside the Dail to call for political leadership and action on women’s equality. Violence against women is an epidemic, women remain the carers in Ireland with minimal shift in our culture of care, our childcare costs are among the highest in Europe, and lone parents, the majority of whom are women, are most impacted by the housing crisis and are the group most at risk of deprivation. Meanwhile, we continue to battle the interference of the Catholic Church in our reproductive healthcare and the future of our new national maternity hospital. We demand change and hope you will join us at the rally. At the rally, we will hold a moment’s silence in solidarity with women and people in Ukraine and Ukrainians in Ireland.

ORGANISER : Afri
Senator Lynn Ruane will introduce – with Bulelani Mfaco, Lucky Khambule, Wasekera-Sekerani Chiphazi, Sikhulekile Ruth Ndlovu and Sian Cowman –a new book published by Afri: End Direct Provision AND Tackle the International Protection System.
This new book details the punishment people have endured and continue to endure in the Direct Provision (DP) system of accommodation for asylum seekers, and the ill treatment they have suffered more broadly at the hands of International Protection Office (IPO) procedures. It comes at a time of widespread concern about what will replace Direct Provision on foot of the Government commitment of March 2021 to end the system.
Through the words of those who have lived within the current system, the book documents “material deprivation and isolation” and a host of other abuses and humiliations inflicted by the authorities and the private contractors they have paid to implement their policies. Accommodation contractors have, the book notes, “earned more than €1.6 billion in 20 years of DP”.
The book emphasises that “the entire international protection system urgently needs deep and radical changes, far beyond the abolition of Direct Provision itself”. In particular, Afri’s aim with this book is to ensure that “the system is not maintained under another name”. More details on the book can be found here.

This year’s Lecture is ‘Politicizing Human Rights in Palestine/Israel’ by Anat Biletzki. A narcissistic view of “Human Rights” (capitals and scare-quotes intended) posits that they are not political; that is, human rights are, or should be, universally conceived, internationally regulated, objectively adjudicated, legally administered, and never instrumentally exploited for particular interests. Contrariwise, however, it is only in explicit political contexts that we can make sense of the goal of “Human Rights” and their defenders – to relieve the woes of victims of tyranny, oppression, and persecution. In Palestine/Israel, the recent criminalization and tagging of Palestinian human rights groups as “terrorist organizations” by Israel is an outrageous, cynical political maneuver. Consequently, only a concerted political struggle can hope to achieve its reversal and bring to the fore, yet again, the hallowed position of Front Line Defenders.

Khadija Mohammed, SFHEA Senior Lecturer in Education at the School of Education and Social Sciences of the University of the West of Scotland will share her experiences and insights on developing an anti-racist approach within teacher education. Khadija will explore the role of academic staff and practice educators in embedding anti-racism within practice based education. Members of the Community Development and Youth Work (CDYW) programme team of TU Dublin Blanchardstown will share their learning based on the development of an anti-racism placement resource for the CDYW programme . A workshop style format is proposed and these two presentations will be followed by a more interactive small group discussion for participants to share their experiences, challenges encountered and examples of best practice with regarding to developing anti-racism in professional education.

Richard Carson of ACET Ireland has developed a new walking tour based solely on
the 500 metre stretch of Lower Gardiner Street in North East Inner City Dublin.
Inspired by the work of Black theologian Willie Jennings, the tour addresses three ideas related to the development of race: displacement, ownership and segregation. How did the singing of a racist hymn in a local church reach the bookshelves of millions? Was a church caretaker living just off the street actually a slave owner? How did the historic landlord-tenant relationship in the area lead to the eviction of 21st century migrant-led churches? Is the street overseen by a colonial archetype? The tour shows how ‘whiteness’ sustains itself in the community by always remaining at the centre. The work of ACET and other agencies in addressing this is highlighted.

#FirstWeds Series: Conflict & Migration through the Lens of Solidarity. Session 1: Solidarity with Ukraine
LOCATION : Zoom
TIME : 7 pm
CONTACT : aga@comhlamh.ie
ORGANISER : Comhlámh
Comhlámh’s #FirstWeds Spring Series holds in mind Ukrainians and people of other countries ridden by war and conflict, who have been forced to leave their homes and cross borders in search of safety. What are some practical ways to extend support and solidarity from Ireland? And, as we extend this support and solidarity, how can we grow our understanding of the geopolitical contexts within which such calamitous events unfold? Moreover, how can we, from here in Europe, ensure a move beyond fortressed border policies and uphold our welcome to all people in need of refuge? Over the next 3 months, we invite you to join us as we explore these questions and more. In the company of panellists from Europe’s East and beyond we want to deepen our understanding of the drivers of the conflict and migration we are witnessing, and challenge the dualities of attitudes towards refugees. We also aim (with some urgency) to consider the many ways we can be in solidarity with communities seeking refuge from war, violence and oppression in 2022, and with those supporting them on this dangerous journey.
